about

For 20 years, Mance had appeared on numerous albums and in performances mainly along the East Coast with a foray into Chicago in the mid 1980's. This album was Mance's chance to strut his stuff, inviting some very talented friends/players on board and also pay homage to some special people in his life.

Track Name: Dirty Old Town
Dirty Old Town
By Ewan McColl

I met my love by the gas works wall
Dreamed a dream by the old canal
Kissed a girl by the factory wall
Dirty old town
Dirty old town

Clouds a drifting across the moon
Cats a prowling on their beat
Springs a girl in the street at night
Dirty old town
Dirty old town

Heard a siren from the docks
Saw a train set the night on fire
Smelled the spring on the smoky wind
Dirty old town
Dirty old town

I'm going to make me a good sharp axe
Shining steel tempered in the fire
Will chop you down like an old dead tree
Dirty old town
Dirty old town

I met my love by the gas works wall
Dreamed a dream by the old canal
Kissed a girl by the factory wall
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
Track Name: Kilgerry Mountain
As I was a ridin' upon Kilgerry mountain
I met Colonel Farrell and his money he was countin'.
I drew forth me pistols, and I rattled out me saber,
Saying, "Stand and deliver, for I am a bold deceiver,"

musha ringum darum da
whack fol me daddy o
whack fol me daddy o
there's whiskey in the jar.

Those gold and silver coins, they did sparkle bright and jolly,
So I took the money home and I gave it to me Molly.
She promised and she swore that she never would deceive me.
But the devil's in the women, and they never can lie easy.

musha ringum darum da
whack fol me daddy o
whack fol me daddy o
there's whiskey in the jar

When I awoke the next morning between the hours of 6 and 7,
There were troopers standing around me in numbers odd and even.
I drew forth me pistols, but alas I was mistaken,
For Molly drowned the charges, and a prisoner I was taken.

Musha ringum darum da
whack fol me daddy o
whack fol me daddy o
there's whiskey in the jar

They took me to the jail, without a trial or writing,
For robbing Colonel Farrel upon Kilgerry Mountain.
But they couldn't take me fists, so I knocked the sentry down,
And bid a fond farewell to the judge in Sligo town.

Oh musha ringum darum da
whack fol me daddy o
whack fol me daddy o
there's whiskey in the jar.

Now some takes delight in a'fishing or in bowling.
And other takes delight in the carriages a'rolling.
But I takes delight in the juice of the barley,
And courting pretty girls in the morning oh so early.

musha ringum darum da
whack fol me daddy o
whack fol me daddy o
there's whiskey in the jar.

Oh yeah, whiskey!

(lilting by Popeye, um I mean, Hughie;-)
Track Name: Where is Home?
Well, I've been on this road
for such a long, long time.
So do I worry 'bout the future
Or do I carry on the way I am,
Live the only way I can.

Oh, fly me
to another world.
Yeah, I know that this one that I live in
I know it don't owe me, not one thing
I want happiness, no diamond rings

Yeah, all I ever wanted
Was a place to call my own
So I can live the way I want to,
But I don't want to be alone.
So will somebody please tell me,
Where is home?
Where am I going?

Well if you want to talk,
don't call me on the phone.
Why don't you come right up and see me
'Cause I know a place where we can go.
There's music and the lights are low.

You can tell me
where have you been all this time?
Have you got yourself together?
or is your life going on like mine?
We talk it out some other time.

And say good bye
to the people that you know.
May you have happiness forever.
May the rivers of your body flow,
And the love that lies within you grow.

Yeah all I ever wanted
Was a place to call my own,
So I can live the way I want to
But I don't want to be alone.
So will somebody please tell me,
Where is home?
Where am I going?

'Cause no matter how I try
It's always been
the same old faces in my world.
And if you stay too closely
You will always be
Just someone else who's trying to find me.
Yeah, where am I going?
